Well, the Sox managed to win the American League East for the second year in a row, which is the first time they have ever done that. They ended up with a record of 93-69, which is pretty good, not great, but good. They managed to win a lot of extra inning games and had a great record against the National league, which are probably the two major reasons they won the division and made the playoffs. The question remains: how are they going to do in the playoffs this year?
Last year they were pretty much done by the end of the regular season and were swept in 3 games by Cleveland in the ALDS. This year they may have a better chance of going further in the playoffs. If they can get by Houston it will be a major accomplishment, but then it doesn’t get any easier. I can see them going to the ALCS series, maybe, but going on from there, perhaps not. Houston won 102 games this year, so it will not be easy winning 3 of 5 from them but they have proven they can beat them as they won 1 of 4 to end the season.
If we get the pitching we got much of the time during the season, we may just be able to do something in the playoffs this year. It all depends on the pitching, which has the No. 3 ERA in the league. If we can hold opponents to 2, 3 or 4 runs per game, the offense is good enough, provided they show up, to get us somewhere. I am not sure how it will go, but will be anxiously watching them play today and tomorrow. I think by the end of the game tomorrow we will know how it is going to go. If they win at least one of the games, there is a good chance we may go all the way. If we lose both it will probably not go past 4 games. If we win both, well the sky’s the limit. It all depends on the next two games.
If we do not win the ALDS, it will be a shame to see the season end as hard as the Sox have battled during much of it. I would like to see them go somewhere in the playoffs, at least to the next round, even if they don’t win the pennant. It would be great to see them go all the way. Much of the season the team struggled to form an identity, but I think now they have found it and it is one we have come to love as Sox fans. Can they battle their way to a world series? We will have to wait and see.
The team is a little banged up as we approach game 1. I’m not sure Mookie is 100% and I know that Pedroia and Nunez are not, even if they do play the entire way. Still, I think we have a chance to go deep in the playoffs, if the pitching holds up and the offense can get it going for some big innings. We will all be eagerly watching as events unfold tonight. It may seem unlikely, but we may go all the way. We will have to wait and see how it goes, but it has been a pretty good season either way. Seeing them battle back from behind as they did so often the second half of the season has been great. Do they have enough to battle through the playoffs against the best teams in the American league? We will see. Anyway, Go Sox!
