The Sox just got beat last night. It’s that simple. Pomeranz put in his worst performance of the year by giving up 6 runs in 4 innings and the bullpen didn’t do any better. They did have some offense, but it wasn’t enough to make up for the poor pitching. Betts went 4 for 4 with 4 RBIs and a homer. The Sox got off to a good start when Betts led off the game with a homer, but by the end of the 1st inning they were behind 5-1 and they never recovered. It is typical of the Sox (and maybe many teams) that when the offense starts to come around and do better, the pitching begins to go south. Let’s hope this trend doesn’t continue. The Sox battled the whole game and the offense looked pretty good, but they never caught up and the final was 11-7.
Should we be worried about the pitching since they haven’t been performing as well of late? Maybe a little, but every starter and pen has a bad day or even a stretch of days every now and then. Perhaps they will get it together and get back into form and do well going forward. We need them to do as well or better than they have so far and especially better than last night, or our struggles will continue. Hembree had a bad night last night and gave up 3 runs on 3 hits and only got 1 out. Taylor also gave up 2 runs to round out the scoring for the Brewers.
We need to win the next 2 games if we are really going to mount a charge for the front in the next few weeks. We are now a full 5 games behind the Orioles, who have taken over 1st in the division. If we do not win the next 2 games, we will perhaps be beginning to fade behind the leaders. We need to make progress, not digress and get further behind. The Rays are only 2.5 games behind us and if we do not get our pitching back we may find ourselves in 4th ere too long.
Kendrick takes the mound tonight and we don’t really know what to expect from him. It may be another high scoring affair that we may lose. I have noted that we are going to struggle every 5th game and it’s that time tonight. Let’s hope Kendrick surprises us and does well. If not we may find ourselves losing the series and only one game over .500 again. We desperately need to win tonight and tomorrow night as well, to keep the ball rolling forward. We will have to have good pitching to do so.
On paper the schedule doesn’t look too tough for May, so we should be able to do well. So far we are 4-4 this month and we need to do better. It seems we win a couple and then lose a couple. We need to break the pattern and make it 3 out of the last 4 tonight. The offense may really be getting it together, but now we need the pitching we have had all season so far to make our move. Now, the pitching is faltering a bit, but let’s hope this doesn’t continue.
We need to just keep our heads up and continue trying to move forward. Maybe we’ll get somewhere, but it is hard to be encouraged after being beaten so soundly by a team that is not supposed to be that good. That’s the thing about baseball, you never can tell who is going to win the game until it is over. Any team (no matter how poor their record) can beat any other team (no matter how good their record) on any given night. We just need to forget last night and continue trying to win games. Come on pitching staff, you have done so well thus far. Let’s keep it together so that we can really move forward with an offense that promises to do better at least for now. Let’s not blow it on the other end now. Anyway, Go Sox!
