Well, the Sox have completed their first 5 games of Spring training with a record or 1-4. The regulars have looked pretty good with limited playing time, but the first 5 especially have really been minor league games. Pablo Sandoval has looked like he might do alright for the team, which is really a plus as we need him to help make up some for the loss of Papi. We haven’t seen any of the big 3 starting pitchers yet and overall the pitching has been poor as we average giving up 6 or more runs per game thus far.
Robby Ross has pitched a couple of times and has had scoreless innings, but the bullpen from last year hasn’t pitched much at all. Abad has pitched twice and done alright, although he still looks like a question mark as he did the end of last season. Joe Kelley has also pitched and managed scoreless innings against minor league hitters. As for the rest of the pitching, I don’t think it matters much except the team isn’t showing much depth in that department.
Mitch Moreland has looked like he may be an asset to the team in his at bats. The rest of the regulars have also managed some hits, though not many runs in their RBI opportunities. It is really to early to tell what the offense or the pitching will be like so we will have to see how the rest of Spring training goes. Still, I would like to see them begin to win some games. So far they have shown only that we don’t have much depth in the minor leagues, especially in the pitching department.
I still don’t know what to expect from the team this year. Will the offense be good enough without Papi 125 or so RBI’s. The pitching may be pretty good if the big three starters can perform up to their potential. It may be another good or even better year, but it may not. We will have to wait and see, but I’m sure we are all ready for the season to start, though we have to wait till April 3rd for opening day when they take on the pirates. We shall see what we shall see. Anyway, GO SOX!
