The Sox won a good game on Saturday. Porcello pitched a good game, going 6 innings and giving up only 2 runs on 8 hits. The bullpen then did their job and shut them out the rest of the way. This is the kind of pitching I am talking about that the team must have to win going forward. Too often lately the pitching has been awful and not kept the Sox in the game long enough to win. It was encouraging to see a good pitching performance all the way around for a change. Betts Bogaerts and Bradley all came through with RBI’s in this game. Bradley and Bogaerts both homered, which was good to see. Vazquez also went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run. A good game for him. Ramirez went 2 for 4 and scored 2 runs. It was good to see him hitting the ball again. Now if we can just get Shaw out of his slump, we will be doing well. He did manage 1 hit yesterday. All it all, it was a good game and fun to watch. The final was 6-2.
It was the pitching that was really the story for the Sox. It looked like another one of those poor performances for the first 2 or so innings. Porcello gave up a run in the first and one in the second and then gave up a single and a double right out of the gate in the 3rd. He then managed to strike out the Mariners no. 3 and No. 4 hitters back to back and got a ground out to end the innings without any runs scoring. From then on out, he was lights out and pitched great. Getting out of that third innings seemed to pick up the offense as well as the team scored 5 runs in the 4th, 5th and 6th after that.
It is games like this one that may help us climb out of our slump. If we string three or four in a row together like it, we will be back on the road to winning. We can only hope the good play from Saturday’s game will carry over and they will continue to play well. We are still in 2nd place but alone now as Baltimore beat Toronto, so we are a game ahead of the Blue Jays now. Maybe we can right the ship from here.
Price is on the mound Sunday and if he can get some run support this time around, we should see a good game from him. He has lost 3 in a row, but only by scores of 3-1 twice and 2-1 once. If we can’t score more that 1 run a game for him, I guess he will continue to pile up the losses. He is pitching well enough to win, we just need to go out there and drive those runs in. He was getting the most run support of any pitcher on the team previously, but for the last 3 games has got none at all. Go figure.
All we can do is keep pulling for our team. We have at least 3 that should go to the All-Star game. If the voting were totaled today we would send Bogaerts, Papi and Bradley. Perhaps the voting will hold up and they can play in it. We had only 1 go last year and that was a managers pick. Nobody was voted in by the fans. It’s funny how things can turn around from one year to the next. We need our players to continue at All-Star caliber. It should work out good in the long run if they do.
Let’s hope this one game wasn’t a fluke and the Sox can get back on the winning trail. There is a long way to go, but it is really crunch time. We need to play well and win from here on out. The playoffs could well be decided in the next 6 weeks or so. I know we can do it, but am unsure whether we will or not. We will see what the future holds, but for now just need to keep plugging away, winning most of our games and looking good even when we don’t win. Let’s win it all for Papi! Go Sox!
