The Sox lost one that they should have won. They had a four run lead going into the bottom of the 8th with Tazawa on the mound. He proceeded to pitch very poorly and the lead went away, going into the 9th tied. The Sox then went ahead by one only to give up 2 in the bottom of the 9th and lose. Bogaerts went 3 for 5 and extended his streak. He also scored 3 times and got an RBI. Pedroia went 2 for 5, scored a run and drove in 2. Poppy went 2 for 5 had a run and an RBI. Ramirez went 2 for 4 with 3 RBI’s. Shaw went 1 for 4 and had a run and 2 RBI’s. Hitting and scoring wasn’t the problem. Clearly the bullpen lost this game. The final was 10-9.
This game was a lot like many games the Sox played last season. No matter how well they did offensively, they would still find a way to lose. The pitching was very poor last season. Let’s just hope Saturday’s game wasn’t an example of what to expect in the future. As I said, we need good pitching to get through the season. If the pitching gets consistently as bad as it was Saturday, we are in for a long season.
For now, we hold on to 1st in the division by 1 game. Toronto is now only 4 games out in 3rd. They are bound to content for the division before the season is out. Still, we need to beat them in the next game. We can’t lose our 4th in a row and be swept by a division rival.
Price will be on the mound and if we get a quality start from him, we should win the next game. The real test will be when we take on the Orioles starting on Monday. If we can at least split the series with them, we should hold on to first. First we need to win Sunday.
We will see how it goes. We continue to hit the ball, but without good pitching we don’t stand much of a chance of staying on top. Porcello did not do too badly in this game, giving up 4 runs in 6.1 innings, but we need good pitching from the pen as well to win. Tomorrow is another day. Let’s go out there and win one. Go Sox!
