The Sox lost a tough one last night. They battled back from 3 down in the 7th and 8th and tied the score only to lose on a 2 run homer by Josh Donaldson, his second in the game and he had 5 RBI’s, in the bottom of the 8th. The hits were pretty much spread around and they only had 7 for the game. Shaw went 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI and Vazquez came through in the 7th with a two run single, but that was about it. Bradley started another hitting streak and Bogaerts extended his to 20 games. Kelly did not pitch one of his best games as he gave up 5 runs in 4.2 innings and couldn’t get Donaldson out. Uehara gave up the two run homer in the 8th that was the difference in the game. It was a disappointing loss. The final was 7-5.
The Orioles won their game so are now only a game back and Toronto moved to within 5 in 3rd place. If the Sox are going to hold on to 1st, they need to win this afternoon. It should be a good contest with Porcello on the mound. Let’s hope he has one of his better games and can keep pace with Stroman who is 5-1 and has been pitching well lately. If he can’t, it may be a long night. Let’s hope the Blue Jays don’t make him look as bad as they did Kelly.
Still, one man drove in 5 of their 7 runs last night. He can’t do that every night, so maybe the Sox will fare better if they can keep Donaldson in check. We surely don’t need to lose our 3rd straight and if we are going to win the series we need to win the next 2. Poppy will be back in the lineup today so we stand a better chance of winning than without him. I hate to see that he needs to take so many breaks. The team really needs his bat in the lineup.
I hate to say it, but it seems the offense has begun to cool off. This is where we need good pitching to step up and win some games. We didn’t get that last night, but today may be a different story. The Blue Jays can really hit the ball when they get hot and there is some indication that they are heating up as they have won 6 of their last 8. We need to stem the tide with Porcello tonight and keep their offense in check. If we can’t depend on the pitching staff to win some games it’s going to be a long season. The offense will not be so hot all the time.
So, let’s keep our heads up and win today to keep the losing from becoming a streak. We are still in 1st, but we need to win against the Jays and the Orioles in the next week to stay on top. We can only hope for the best and keep pulling for our boys. Go Sox!
