The Sox won again on Sunday. Betts went 2 for 5 and scored twice, Bogaerts went 3 for 5 and scored once with an RBI and Ortiz went 4 for 4, scored once and had 3 RBI’s with a homer (11th) in the 5th inning. It was a well pitched game for Porcello who went 5.2 innings and gave up 2 runs on 5 hits. This is the kind of game that most of the wins will probably be as the season progresses. We need to win the close ones to have a successful season. Kimbrel got another save under his belt, too. The final was 5-2.
The Sox have moved back into a tie for 1st in the division, as the Orioles lost. The Yankees won their 5th straight and moved into a 3rd place tie with the Rays. We are going to see New York at the top of the division before too long, if they keep playing well. Right now they are 5.5 games back, so time will tell. They have moved from the cellar to 3rd in the last week. Toronto finally won a game, but they are now in last place, 6 games out of 1st. Still, it is any ones division to take. We will see what happens in the coming weeks.
The Sox are doing fine, for now. They have split the last 6 games and are still 10 games over .500. If they don’t do any worse than that, they should stay at the top of the division standings. They did win the series against a tough Cleveland team. If they can continue to come out on top in most of their series, all will be well.
Bogaerts extended his hitting streak to 16 games and Bradley continues on and is now at 27 straight. With those two hitting well and help from others in each game, we should be able to keep on winning for a while. Incidentally, Brock Holt, instead of getting better at the plate, has gone down with a minor injury. Let’s hope he doesn’t stay on the DL for too long. I would like to see him have a great season yet this year.
Our pitching staff is in great shape. Kelly is back and Rodriquez should be back soon. I still don’t know what move Farrell is going to make when he has 6 good starting pitchers to fit into a 5 man rotation. I hope he doesn’t send Wright down to the minors, but I don’t know what else he could do but maybe keep him in the bullpen. Buchholz is really the only weakness on the rotation right now., but everyone keeps expecting him to do better each time he starts. Perhaps putting him in the pen as a long reliever might be the best move. We will have to wait and see what Farrell decides to do.
Right now we need to just keep the nose to the grind and win when we can and still look good even when we lose. We have a long way to go. Endurance is the key. We will have to see soon what June brings. Let’s go out there and win for Poppy’s final season! Go Sox!
