The Sox dropped game 1 of the series in Kansas City last night. It was a poor pitching performance by Porcello and then the bullpen that blew the game. Porcello pitched 5.1 innings (breaking his streak of 15 games of 6 innings or more) and gave up 5 runs, which is his worst outing so far this season. Then in the 8th Uehara came in and made a throwing error that allowed a run and then gave up a 2 run homer. That was very un-Koje like. Shaw had a good game going 3 for 4 and hitting a 3 run homer, but it wasn’t enough. The Sox were held to only 8 hits, breaking their streak of consecutive games with 10 or more hits. On another night it might have been enough to win, but they did not have the quality pitching they needed. The final was 8-4.
Everybody in the division lost last might, except Tampa Bay which resulted in the Sox still being tied for 1st in the division and Tampa Bay moving into 3rd, 5 games back. Once in a while you get a game from Uehara where he does not do well. If he could have held the score at 5-4 Royals, it might have been a different story. Well, you win some, you lose some. As long as it doesn’t become a trend.
Hopefully we can bounce back today as we play a day-night double header. Wright is on the mound for the afternoon game and if he can have a better outing than last time out, we should be in a good position to win this one. He should have a good outing as I believe it was the rain that hindered his knuckle ball last time out. The weather forecast looks good for the game so hopefully he can get a better grip on the ball today.
I am a little worried about Brock Holt. He is playing fine in left field, but has been struggling mightily at the plate for quite some time. He is the only one on the team who is not really living up to last years numbers. He needs to get out of his slump and help the team when he has opportunity. It would be good to see him hitting the ball again.
Well, we’ll see if we can bounce back and win the next two games. It would be great to win the series but the Royals are a good team so if we lose it there’s always tomorrow. The Royals are last years world series winners but have not been playing up to that level so far this season. We have a long way to go, so anything can happen. They are not as good as late last season as they were almost unbeatable then. If we can beat them 2 out of 3 we will be doing great. We need good quality starts from the pitching staff to do so I think.
Let’s just keep plodding along and go out to win every game. That’s all we can do at this point. There is still a long way to go. We are 9 games above .500. If we can stay in this area we will be doing fine as the season grinds on. Let’s hope we can. Go Sox!
